Night dryness is a different skill from daytime training — it depends on physical development you can't rush. Many children stay in night diapers for months or years after mastering the potty by day, and that's completely normal.
Why nights come later
Staying dry overnight requires two things: a bladder big enough to hold a night's worth of urine, and a brain that either wakes for a full bladder or produces enough anti-diuretic hormone to slow urine production during sleep. Both develop on their own timetable. Around one in five five-year-olds still wets the bed occasionally, and doctors generally don't consider night wetting a medical concern before age seven.
Signs your child is ready for night training
- Dry mornings — the night diaper is dry (or barely wet) most mornings for a couple of weeks.
- Daytime is solid — few daytime accidents, and they self-initiate potty trips.
- They wake to pee — occasionally waking at night asking for the toilet is a strong sign.
Without dry mornings, there's little to train — it's a development question, not a motivation question. Check again in a month or two.
How to make the switch
- Talk it up. Tell your child they're ready to sleep without a diaper, and let them help pick underwear for the night.
- Protect the mattress. A waterproof cover, plus a spare sheet and pajamas within reach, keeps 2 AM accidents boring.
- Front-load fluids. Keep drinks normal during the day and lighter in the last hour before bed — no need to restrict harshly.
- Potty as the last stop. Make a potty sit the final step of the bedtime routine, after stories and brushing.
- Expect wet nights. A few accidents a week at the start is normal. Strip the bed together without fuss and try again.
If night accidents stay frequent after two or three weeks, going back to night diapers for a while isn't a failure — it just means the body isn't quite there yet.
Where Sprout fits in
Sprout tracks dry nights alongside daytime progress, so you can see when dry mornings become the norm — the signal that it's time to try nights without a diaper. During the day, its predictions keep the routine on track, and streaks give your child something to be proud of.
